Projects

Innovation, in the field

Our projects put collaboration and innovation to work on real farms — from youth learning to on-the-ground technology and our blueberry pilot.

01

Farm Learning Tours

We bring kids and young people onto working farms for hands-on experiences with farming, food, business and innovation — helping the next generation understand where food comes from and see agriculture as a modern career and opportunity.

Innovation Spotlight

We showcase promising agricultural technologies and practices happening across BC — taking farmers and organizations beyond reports and presentations to see innovation working firsthand in greenhouses, fields, farms, labs and controlled growing environments.

Blueberry Next

Blueberries show the opportunity: Canada has a globally important crop, but the next gains require better evidence, innovation and collaboration.

Canada blueberry exports, 2024

  • Blueberries were Canada's top fruit export by value in 2024.
  • British Columbia accounts for about 94% of Canada's highbush blueberry production.
  • Canada still imports significant volumes of blueberries — creating a food-resilience opportunity alongside the export opportunity.

The Challenge

Canada grows a globally important blueberry crop, but the next round of gains won't come from doing more of the same. Farmers need better evidence, shared innovation and stronger collaboration to keep improving yield, quality and returns.

What GRIS Is Doing

GRIS is coordinating a pilot that connects growers with researchers, technology partners and industry — bringing evidence and innovation directly to the field rather than leaving it in reports and presentations.

Who Is Involved

Growers, research partners and industry collaborators are working together, with the BC Blueberry Council and advisory experts helping guide the direction of the work.

What Is Being Tested

Practical approaches to improving fruit quality, yield consistency and sustainable practices under real growing conditions.

What Is Being Measured

Field-level indicators that matter to farmers — quality, consistency and the practical viability of the practices being trialled.

Learning / Progress

The pilot is actively underway. Insights are being gathered and shared with the ecosystem as the work progresses.

Challenges & Opportunities

Yield & Quality

Improving consistency of yield and fruit quality through better evidence, data and field practices.

Sustainability

Reducing inputs and environmental impact while keeping farms productive and profitable.

Processed to Fresh

Capturing more value by moving suitable production from processed streams toward higher-value fresh markets.

Expected — not yet completed

Expected Outcomes

If successful, the pilot is expected to produce practical, evidence-based insights that growers can apply — supporting better quality, more consistent yields and a stronger case for innovation and collaboration across the sector. These outcomes are anticipated and will be shared as the work continues.
